Innovation in Hire: How Smarter Equipment is Changing the Way We Work

Running a successful site today means managing more variables than ever before. Compliance obligations have grown more complex. Noise and disruption complaints from surrounding communities can stall or shut down a job entirely. Councils are tightening permit conditions and when equipment underperforms, or fails a compliance check, the cost isn’t just financial. It’s lost time, damaged relationships, and a reputation that’s hard to rebuild. These are everyday pressures facing contractors, project managers, and event organisers across the industry.

At RPM Hire, we’ve invested in technology and equipment specifically designed to address these pressure points: reducing noise impact, simplifying compliance, and giving site managers greater visibility and control. Here are the three innovations that we created to make a measurable difference for our customers right now.

VMS Integrated With Speed Radar and CCTV

A Variable Message Sign on its own does a solid job. It communicates. It warns. It directs. But a VMS paired with speed radar and CCTV does something far more powerful, it responds, records, and reports.

Instead of running three separate systems that need to be coordinated, maintained, and managed independently, this integrated unit brings everything together in one. The sign reads live vehicle speeds from the onboard radar and adjusts its messaging in real time based on what’s actually happening on the road in front of it. Drivers travelling too fast don’t just encounter a static warning, they encounter a sign that’s directly reacting to their behaviour.

The CCTV layer captures it all. HD footage, a timestamped record of road user behaviour, and documented evidence you can actually use if an incident occurs or a compliance question is raised down the track.

Everything feeds through the RPM Track Platform:

  • Accessible remotely via 4G
  • Access on desktop or mobile
  • Speed data
  • Vehicle counts
  • Visual monitoring
  • Complete history of activity on site from the moment it’s switched on

The result is fewer separate pieces of equipment to coordinate, stronger and more defensible compliance outcomes, and a clear audit trail that gives project managers and site supervisors genuine peace of mind.

VSLS Leg Extensions

A Variable Speed Limit Sign is only as effective as its visibility. On a perfectly flat, open stretch of road that’s a simple equation, but most worksites aren’t that cooperative.

Uneven ground, concrete barriers, steel barriers, elevated roadways, narrow shoulders, and complex site layouts all create visibility challenges that standard trailer configurations simply weren’t designed to handle. The signs are too low, and drivers aren’t able to see the sign in time. We created a VSLS leg extensions to close the gap and to ensure a safe and compliant piece of equipment. By providing 30–50cm of adjustable additional height, the legs allow the sign to be correctly positioned across a far wider range of real-world site conditions.

The right sign height means better driver visibility, earlier reaction times, and a setup that holds up under scrutiny, on any terrain, in any conditions.

Noise Cancelling Gawk Screens

Gawk screens have always had a clear job: reduce driver distraction near worksites and incident scenes by blocking the sightline. They’ve been doing that job reliably for years, and they do it well. But for sites operating close to residential streets, schools, hospitals, aged care facilities, or busy event precincts, blocking the view is often only half the problem.

Noise is the other half, and it’s one that traditional gawk screens don’t address.

Our noise cancelling gawk screens change that by incorporating sound attenuation directly into the screen design. This means there is one unit but with two functions. No second piece of equipment needed, no additional hire cost, and no scrambling to find a solution when noise complaints arise.

For project managers working in sensitive environments, the practical benefits are significant:

  • Fewer noise-related complaints from the surrounding community
  • Smoother relationships with local residents and stakeholders
  • Proactive approach to environmental compliance that’s built into the setup from day one rather than bolted on as an afterthought.

Ready to Hire Smarter Traffic Management Equipment?

Smarter equipment means simpler sites. Fewer items to coordinate, fewer points of failure, and better outcomes for everyone involved, your crew, your client, and the community your project operates within.

Variable Message Signs integrated with CCTV and Speed Radars, Variable Speed Limit Sign leg extensions and noise cancelling gawk screens are three solutions available to hire right now. If you’d like to talk through the right configuration for your next project, our team of traffic management specialists are ready to help.
